My last "law and order" series post reported on several crimes by local 20-somethings. Another crime by two men in that age group is reported in the Sept. 3 issue of the Newton County Times. Here's what happened: Two Newton County men, one aged 26 and the other 27, approached two men from Kansas City at a convenience store in nearby Boone County. The local men "offered to sell the men moonshine and psychedelic mushrooms." The Kansas City men followed the local men to the residence of one of the locals "where they sold the men moonshine and psychedelic mushrooms." The Kansas City men were later assaulted at their campsite on the Buffalo River by men demanding money, and the out of towners identified the assailants as those who had sold them the moonshine and mushrooms. "Agency investigators" identified the suspects based on the victims' descriptions, and a search warrant of one of the local men's residence turned up evidence linking them to the attack, including--you guessed it--moonshine and mushrooms.
Other than this crime news, this early September issue of the paper is full of county fair news, includig wonderful photos of two female 4-H'ers who won the big prizes ($1000 and 500, respectively) for showing their champion heifers.
A front-page story announces a new nurse practitioner who will be working at the Newton County Family Practice Clinic. This issue also includes the first in a series of articles about homes that will be included in the Newton County Single Parent Scholarship Fund Home Tour.
